The French think tank Institut Montaigne has released the strategic report “Puissance spatiale: le réveil de la France”, offering an in-depth diagnosis of the country’s current position in the global space sector and the institutional and industrial shifts needed to strengthen its leadership in the years ahead.
The document begins with a critical review of France’s current space model, arguing that the gap between ambition and execution has widened over time. It points to fragmented governance, a lack of technological investment, and insufficient political vision as key weaknesses. Against this backdrop, the report calls for a renewed commitment to space as a strategic national priority.
It proposes a multi-faceted approach: reinforcing political leadership, modernising governance, accelerating investment in breakthrough technologies, boosting competitiveness, particularly among startups, and leveraging European collaboration as a tool to scale capacity, not as a substitute for sovereignty.
