On 25 November, the European Parliament approved the European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP), an instrument designed to strengthen the European Union’s industrial capacity and its strategic readiness. With this vote, Parliament gives the green light to a framework intended to ensure that the EU has the industrial resources needed to respond swiftly to crises and to increasingly demanding defence needs.
According to the adopted resolution, EDIP will establish a set of rules aimed at improving the availability and supply of defence products across the European market. In doing so, it will support mechanisms that help increase production, reduce dependencies and facilitate cooperation among Member States. The programme also introduces measures to foster innovation, promote joint procurement and provide stability for long-term industrial planning in a sector that is evolving rapidly.
Despite Parliament’s approval, the text must still complete the remaining formal steps, including its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union, before it can fully enter into force.
The adoption of this programme marks an important step for Europe’s industrial landscape, consolidating a dedicated regulatory framework for long-term projects in an area considered strategic for the EU.
