How can data help us anticipate risks and make better decisions? This question was the focus of the third and final session of the “Technology under Tension” series, organised by the Observatori Social and Fundació KIMbcn. The discussion featured Montse Sitjà, Cluster Manager at AeroS, alongside Estel Blay, Program Manager at the IEEC, and Jordi Cobrera, Head of the Earth Observation Department at the ICGC.
Held at Palau Macaya on 8 October, the event explored the potential of Earth observation, satellites, drones, sensors and predictive models to identify vulnerabilities and strengthen the resilience of cities, territories and infrastructure against hazards such as floods, droughts, wildfires and extreme weather events.
Connecting the ecosystem’s capabilities with local needs
AeroS brought the perspective of businesses and cooperation within the aeronautical and space sector, focusing on the cluster’s role in connecting complementary technological capabilities and making them available to public authorities and infrastructure managers.
The discussion also explored the growing capabilities of the Catalan ecosystem, including innovative projects such as ESA Phi-Lab Spain, a European initiative bringing together specialised innovation centres, each focused on specific thematic areas within space technology. This network is part of ESA’s ScaleUp programme, designed to stimulate commercial activity by advancing technologies with strong market potential.
