Aena’s record investment plan through 2031

Aena plans to invest close to €13 billion between 2027 and 2031 to modernise and expand capacity across its airport network. The programme, which will be incorporated into the new Airport Regulation Document (DORA III), represents Spain’s largest airport investment in recent decades.

The plan will address the growth in air traffic, improve passenger experience and safety, and enhance the sustainability of airport facilities. Of the planned investment, €1.5 billion will be allocated to technology, innovation and environmental sustainability projects, with the aim of enabling the airports to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030.

The work will cover Aena’s entire network of 46 airports and two heliports. The announced projects include:

• Madrid-Barajas: close to €4 billion to expand T4 and T4S and renovate terminals T1, T2 and T3.

• Barcelona-El Prat: approximately €3.2 billion to increase the capacity of its facilities and develop a new satellite terminal.

• Málaga-Costa del Sol: approximately €1.5 billion to expand and reconfigure the terminal areas.

• Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández: more than €1 billion to expand the terminal and build a new taxiway.

In Catalonia, the plan also covers the other airports managed by Aena. The planned investments amount to €112.4 million at Girona-Costa Brava Airport, €62.7 million at Reus Airport and €22.3 million at Sabadell Airport. According to Spain’s Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, the investments will be financed through airport charges and increased revenue generated by Aena itself.

According to the Spanish Government, these investments will help improve connectivity, strengthen business competitiveness, and generate economic activity and employment.
